Lay it on the line .... సంగతేంటి?

Take a severe beating, to lay it on the line, a foot in the door, run circles around ...నూతనంగా వాడుకలోకి వస్తున్న ఇలాంటి వ్యక్తీకరణల గురించి ఉదాహరణలతో సహా తెలుసుకుందాం!

Wilson: Scams, scams and nothing but scams- the country is going to dogs, I am sure.(కుంభకోణాలు, కుంభకోణాలు తప్ప ఇంకేం లేదు. దేశం భ్రష్టు పట్టిపోతోంది.)

Sunitha: The second term of the UPA has been troubled with these scams all the way down the line. We have in A.P., the OMC scam too- Congress has taken a severe beating, certainly. (UPA రెండోసారి అధికారంలోకి వచ్చినప్పటినుంచి ఎప్పుడూ ఈ కుంభకోణాల ఇబ్బందే పడ్తోంది. మన రాష్ట్రంలో ఓబులాపురం గనుల కుంభకోణం.)

Wilson: I had to lay it on the line to my dad, though he is a Congress man. He is quite unhappy about it as well. He just hoped that better days would come. (మా నాన్న కాంగ్రెస్‌వాదే అయినా ఆయన్తో దీన్ని గురించి చెప్పటం తప్పటంలేదు. ఆయనా దీని విషయంలో అంత సంతోషంగా లేడు. మంచి రోజులొస్తాయనే ఆశతో ఉన్నాడు.)

Sunitha: But the other parties are not much better, are they? All that they want is a foot in the door, and then make as much money as possible. (ఇతర పార్టీలేం అంత మెరుగ్గా లేవు కదా! వాళ్లక్కావాల్సింది కూడా అవకాశమే. ఆ తర్వాత ఎంత వీలయితే అంత డబ్బు చేస్కోటం.)

Wilson: Looking for an honest politician in India is like searching for a needle in a hay stack. (భారత్‌లో నిజాయితీ గల రాజకీయవాది కోసం చూడ్డం, గడ్డివామిలో సూది వెదికినట్టే.)

Sunitha: Are the voters any the better? Aren't they corrupt too? It's either money or liquor that draws voters to the polling booth, isn't it? And another thing- politicians in other countries are corrupt too. (ఓటర్లంత కన్నా మెరుగా? వాళ్లూ అవినీతిపరులేగా? Polling boothలకు వెళ్లటం డబ్బు, మందు వల్లే కదా? / డబ్బు, మందూ లేనిదే ఓట్లు వేసేందుకు వెళ్లరు కదా? మరో విషయం- ఇతర దేశాల్లో రాజకీయవాదులు కూడా అవినీతిపరులే)

Wilson: But our politicians run circles around them. Their methods of making money are ingenious. (కానీ ఆ విషయంలో రాజకీయవాదులు వోటర్ల కంటే చాలా చాలా ఎక్కువ. డబ్బు చేస్కొనేందుకు వాళ్లకు చాలా తెలివయిన పద్ధతులుంటాయి.)

Sunitha: Is there any hope for us? Or is Anna Hazare fighting a losing battle? (ఏమన్నా ఆశ ఉందా మనకు, దేశం బాగుపడ్తుందని; లేకపోతే అన్నా హజారే పోరాటం ఓటమికేనా?)

Wilson: Let's hope it isn't. (అలా కాదని ఆశిద్దాం.)

Look at the following expressions from the conversation above.

1) Congress has taken a severe beating
present perfect tense of 'Take a severe beating = Be defeated/ lose something especially, money or prestige = ఓడిపోవటం/ కోల్పోవటం.

a) The English team has taken a/some/a severe beating in the last cricket series =మొన్న జరిగిన క్రికెట్‌ పోటీల్లో ఇంగ్లిష్‌ జట్టు ఘోరంగా దెబ్బతింది/ ఓటమిపాలయింది.
b) Bharat: Charith is nowhere to be seen. He has gone into hiding or what?(చరిత్‌ ఎక్కడా కన్పట్టంలేదు. ఎక్కడైనా దాక్కున్నాడా ఏంటి?)
(Go into hiding =దాక్కోవటం)

Pandavas went into hiding during their one year of unknown existence (అజ్ఞాతవాసం)

Subhas: You can say that. Havi ng taken a severe beating in the corruption case, he has no courage to face anybody (నువ్వా మాట అనొచ్చు. అవినీతి కేసులో పూర్తిగా దెబ్బతిని, ఎవర్నీ ఎదుర్కొనే ధైర్యం లేదతనికి)

2) To lay it on the line
ఇది చాలా modern expression = To tell somebody the truth they may not like=నిజం చెప్పేయటం, అవతలివాళ్లకు నచ్చకపోయినా/ బాధ కలిగించినా.

a) Charan: Why is Prameela so down? (ప్రమీల ఎందుకంత నిరాశగా ఉంది?)
Divya: The manager has laid it on the line - some people may not get promotions, Prameela among them. (Manager మనకు బాధ కల్గించే యదార్థాన్ని చెప్పాడు- ప్రమీలతో సహా కొంతమందికి promotions రాకపోవచ్చని)

b) Praneetha: What's worrying you? (ఎందుకంత ఆందోళనగా ఉన్నావు?)

Yashvanth: I have to lay it on the line to Mahesh and tell him that his work is no good and that he is going to lose his job (మహేష్‌కు నచ్చని నిజం చెప్పాలి నేను. అతని పనితీరేం బాగా లేదు అని, అతని ఉద్యోగం పోతుందని.)

c) Lay it on the line to her, she is not among those selected =ఆమెతో చెప్పేయ్‌, ఈ నిజం ఆమెకు నచ్చకపోయినా- ఎంపికయినవాళ్ళలో ఆమె లేదు.

3) Get/have a foot in the door =అవకాశం పొందటం (ఏ రంగంలోనైనా, పైకి వెళ్ళేందుకు)
a) She had always wanted to be a film star, but had to wait for two years to get a foot in the door/have a foot in the door =ఆమె సినిమా తార కావాలని కోరుకునేది. కానీ చిత్రసీమలో అడుగుపెట్టే అవకాశం పొందడానికి రెండేళ్లు పట్టింది.

b) Karim: Charles appears innocent. (Charles అమాయకుడిలా కన్పిస్తున్నాడు)
Abdulla: You are mistaken. He is quite Smart. Let him have just his foot in any thing, he will soon rise to the top (నువ్వు పొరబడ్డావు. అతను చాలా తెలివి కలవాడు. ఎక్కడైనా కాలూనేంత సందు దొరికితే చాలు, పైకి అల్లుకుపోతాడు)

4) Run circles around somebody = Run rings around somebody = ఇది కూడా modern expression=ఒకర్ని మించిపోవటం.
a) Purandhar: Hema is a great dancer, I know, but what about Rajitha? (హేమ గొప్ప నర్తకి అని నాకు తెలుసు. కానీ రజిత సంగతేంటి?)
Yugandhar: She is even greater. She can run circles/ rings around Hema =ఆమె ఇంకా గొప్పది. ఆమె హేమకన్నా చాలా రెట్లు ఎక్కువ/ హేమను ఎంతో మించిపోతుంది.

b) Dhanush: The shore temples of Mahabalipuram are a marvel of architecture and sculpture =మహాబలిపురం సముద్రతీరపు గుళ్ల వాస్తు, శిల్పశాస్త్రం అద్భుతాలు.
Avinash: They certainly are; but the temples of Konark and their sculptures run circles/rings around the Mahabalipuram temples. (కచ్చితంగా. కానీ కోణార్క గుళ్లు, శిల్పాలు వాటిని ఎన్నోరెట్లు/ చాలా రెట్లు మించిపోయాయి)
